KUALA LUMPUR: A theater musical Belalang organized by the Setiawangsa National School Theater Club (SK) Kuala Lumpur will be staged starting today and tomorrow (January 14).

The director of Belalang theater Amar Reza Zainal Abidin when met told that the staging was supposed to be held in 2019 but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“After four years, I am grateful that the Belalang musical theater can finally be realized. A total of 40 students aged nine to 12 years were involved in making this musical theater performance a success.

“The story line of Belalang theater is adapted from the famous film Nujum Pak Belalang starring the late Tan Sri P Ramlee which was shown in 1959.

“At that time I was working as a substitute teacher at this school while the original script of Belalang theater was touched by SK Setiawangsa’s principal, Puan Norhayati Haron.

“There are a few additions to make the storyline more ‘light’, suitable for children to watch so that it is easier to understand,” he said, who is also the individual behind the digital project ‘Cik Yah’.

In the meantime, Setiawangsa Member of Parliament Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad when met at the full rehearsal session of the Belalang theater said he was impressed with the talent displayed by the school’s students.

“As a Member of Parliament for Setiawangsa, of course I will go to the field to give my full support. Seeing the performance of children as young as nine years old acting on a professional stage and singing, it’s an extraordinary effort and performance,” he said, hoping that the public would come and show their support.

Belalang musical theater also got the cooperation of the Federal Territories Department of Education with Armada Karya Production which was staged at Matic, Jalan Ampang.

Tickets can be purchased at the Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman ticket sales counter starting today and tomorrow.
