145 participants involving 28 countries participated in the 38th IBBY Congress

A TOTAL of 145 participants participated in the 38th Congress of the International Book Board for Children and Young People (IBBY) which was held in Putrajaya today.

The congress which lasted for three days starting September 5 involved publishers, writers, storytellers and book lovers from 28 countries.

Federal Territories Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim said that with the theme of ‘ The Power of Stories ‘, this congress allows participants to explore the similarities between the real world and books.

“Themed ‘ The Power of Stories ‘ or the impact brought by a story, this congress allows participants to explore the similarities in children’s stories across countries, cultures and education systems.

“In addition, the participants can compare, share and discuss stories and lessons from a story and how it can help to understand the role, approach and challenges and become a tool in getting to know each other’s civilization and culture,” he said when speaking at the Dinner. Welcoming Dinner held at Hotel Zenith, Putrajaya.

In the meantime, Shahidan informed IBBY to emphasize sub-themes including; storytelling that can inspire, strengthening oral and visual, value and identity of literature, strengthening literature as well as mastery of empathy and memory in storytelling for children and teenagers, as well as children’s cognitive development.

“As a father and grandfather, I strongly support the development of knowledge and efforts to cultivate the practice of reading from an early age. I also really appreciate the publication of children’s storytelling books and the publication of high quality books.

“The practice of reading develops the civilization of the nation, society and country through the richness of the value of knowledge. In fact, the first verse that was revealed to the Prophet SAW as a sign that he had been appointed as a Messenger or messenger of Allah SWT is about the call to read.

“For local participants including writers, illustrators and translators, make this congress an opportunity to meet international industry experts, exchange and share knowledge and expertise,” he said.

He added that the Ministry of Federal Territories (KWP) was very proud of the selection of Putrajaya as the first country in the Southeast Asian region to host this biennial congress.

The ceremony was also attended by the Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Federal Territories (Planning and Development), Datuk Ruzain Idris; Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Federal Territories (Management and Socio-Economy), Datuk Parang Abai @ Thomas; Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Territory Foundation, Datuk Zaizalnizam Zainun; President of Putrajaya Corporation, Datuk TPr Fadlun Mak Ujud; IBBY President, Mingzhou Zhang and Malaysian Board On Books For Young People (MBBY) President, Ahmad Redza Ahmad Khairuddin.
